The commission process
In collaboration with you, I create unique, compelling creations that draw you back time and time again, sparking joy.

  1. First Jean would need to establish the size and orientation of the piece you are commissioning. For example, if it is a statement art piece, whether it will be portrait or landscape. Sizing and orientation is based on your personal preferences, or on the available space, taking into account any furniture which may be close by. Jean can conduct a site visit or work from photographs to help you make a decision as needed.
  2. Jean collaborates with you to determine colours, shapes and styling of the piece you are commissioning. This may include you sharing paint chips and fabric samples. Jean can offer a colour matching service when on site.
  3. If you would like handmade wire pendants, or if gilding is to be a feature on a statement art piece, we need to choose which kind of metal and colour of the leaf. There are several kinds of wire and metal leaf to choose from. For example, Jean currently offers copper, brass, aluminium, steel and rusted steel wire lighting, along with copper, silver and gold leaf gilding. The price of different metals can vary considerably and the cost of the leaf fluctuates regularly.
  4. Jean will draw up some ideas to share with you and will share a pricing estimate for each.
  5. If you are happy to go ahead Jean will send you an invoice for 50 percent of the total estimate. Once the work commences, this deposit becomes non-refundable.
  6. On receipt of the deposit I begin creating your unique sculptural lighting or statement artwork.
  7. During the creative process Jean can send you photographs and updates on the progress of the piece if you wish.
  8. Completion is dependent on current lead times and the complexity of the commissioned project. For example, a hand carved, sculpted plaster pendant will take several weeks, whereas a wire pendant is completed much quicker. Also humidity can affect curing times. You will be kept up to date throughout the process.

One of a kind pieces
Due to the nature of the work, all lighting and decorator pieces are one of a kind. Should you wish to have identical pieces, items can be made to look similar, yet there will always be some difference between them.

The size of the lights is somewhat indicative as they will vary in shape/size due to the nature of the way they are built.

Wire pendants

Nature has a wonderful way of creating a patina in raw copper and brass, which is due to the oxidation process. Many people love the organic nature of the patination process and enjoy the ever-evolving changes that occur in these metals. We want to remind you that all uncoated metals are subject to some natural discolouration over time when exposed to the elements. This includes aluminium. Rather than being very bright silver, its colour can fade over time. Jean can use a coated copper wire for your pendant if you prefer the new look of copper, or you can request to have your brass, copper or aluminium pendant coated with a high grade metal clear coat to preserve its brightness. However, this too has its limitations and may wear with varying amounts of use and environmental factors. Whilst aluminium, copper and brass will last for many years, the lacquered finish cannot be guaranteed unconditionally. As such, we encourage you to embrace the beauty of the metal’s natural colour as it changes over the years.

Due to the natural properties of handwoven wire, pendants should be handled with care when taking them down or installing. When handling, it is advised that you hold the pendant from the top and base of the pendant. Whilst all care is taken to ensure the wire does not stick out. Please be aware that some small sections of wire may protrude slightly from the pendant and could catch on your clothing or person.

Aluminium wire is very light. One can have a large pendant made from this and it will generally be able to hang from a generic ceiling rose. Aluminium wire is very soft by nature and should be handled with care. When making larger pendants, Jean uses more wire to help ensure they retain their shape when handled. For example, Jean may use around 100 metres of wire in a 600*500 pendant shade.

Plaster pendants and decorator pieces
People often think that plaster is fragile. It is not. Consider the plaster casts that one used to wear to keep a reset broken bone in place and you have an idea of how strong and robust plaster is.

When it comes to sculpture, plaster is very versatile. It can be the sole material, or combined with others, such as wood, metal or glass.

Jean’s plaster sculptures have various forms of armature upon which plaster is applied such as wire mesh or cloth. This helps to ensure the integrity of the piece.

Packages face a myriad of potential hazards between the time they leave the studio and when they reach your doorstep. Proper packaging is the first step we take to ensure your package is successfully delivered. As such, we use sturdy boxes, quality cushioning and ties, and strong adhesive tape.

Should your purchase be damaged in transit please email jean.caldow@gmail.com within 14 days of your merchandise delivery date, with the following information:

  • At least 3 photos of your damaged piece to show the damage from various angles, e.g., top down and side views.
  • A photo of the shipping container it arrived in, if the package is also damaged.
  • Your tax invoice number or a photo of the tax invoice that arrived with your merchandise.
  • A brief description of the reason for the return.
  • Whether you would like a refund or replacement. Please note that one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces cannot be replicated exactly, as such a similar product replacement will be offered.

After sending this information through, you will receive an email within 24-48 hours confirming that your return is being processed.  If your return is confirmed, you will not need to mail back your product.  We will process the refund or replacement based on your photos.

Returning merchandise damaged in transit

If the damage or quality issue is not apparent in the photo you sent through when reporting your damaged item, you may be required to return the item at your expense in its original packaging, or if the original packaging was damaged, in alternate appropriate packaging that suits the fragile nature of the merchandise. Please also email through a copy of your shipping receipt. When shipping a return/exchange item, you should consider using a trackable shipping service or purchasing shipping insurance as we cannot guarantee that we will receive your returned item.

Due to the fragile nature of the merchandise, you will be required to ensure appropriate packaging of the merchandise. This should include a sturdy box—or one box packed with cushioning inside another box—appropriate cushioning of the merchandise, and strong adhesive tape. If you are not familiar with packing fragile items, please consider utilising a shipping service.

Upon receipt of your merchandise, your item will be inspected. If it is found to be damaged and unsuitable for the purpose it was designed for, a return will be processed. Your return will also include the cost of shipping your item back to inJeanious. Refunds are typically issued within 48-72 hours of receiving the package.

Merchandise damaged in transit through a courier you have organised

You will need to contact the courier who delivered your item to make a claim directly through them. inJeanious will provide you with proof of appropriate packing prior to shipment, through the provision of several photos taken of the packing process.
